Nexus Academy of Lansing
Nexus Academy of Lansing is a blended learning high school serving the greater Lansing area. I was the sole Social Studies teacher serving a population of around 280 students. I taught US History, World History, Government, Economics and Psychology. Working at Nexus Academy allowed me to use my education and knowledge of all content areas to its fullest.
I was a Lead Teacher and Success/Academic Coach at the school, where my responsibilities ranged on day to day basis. My main responsibilities were to teach an advisory period, that involved preparing students for college and career readiness, use data to track student progress and completion, and implement plans based off of data to ensure student success.
At Nexus Academy I have had the opportunity to work on several projects to improve our school community. In the Spring of 2015, using my Masters Education in Teaching and Curriculum, I created a teacher mentoring program which I was able to present to our school leaders. Over the summer parts of the program were adapted and put into place for the 2015-2016 school year.
I have had the opportunity to work on creating and implementing an ACT Preparatory program for our students. Throughout the 2014-2015 school year I worked with three other teachers to create and implement and ACT Prep program for Nexus Academy. The program was overall successful and most students were able to raise scores from pre to post test.
During my time at Nexus Academy I was promoted to Lead Teacher. This is a position that leads all other Michigan Success/Academic Advisers through best practices of our Nexus Academy schools. There are currently three Nexus Academy schools in Michigan, with a total of 8 Success/Academic coaches. My job responsibilities with this position were to lead the members in best practices, have discussions about how we can improve our schools, create plans to implement improvement, and provide feedback and aid as needed.
I have had the unique opportunity to create and lead a mentoring program for our students at Nexus Academy. Nexus is a blended learning environment and is a new way to "do" education so it can be confusing for students to adapt to our system. At Nexus I have created a mentor program where I have selected student mentors, assigned them to a group of students, and had them lead their students through lessons that apply to the school, like proper email etiquette, and how to navigate through their courses.
At Nexus Academy I served as the Chapter Adviser for the National Honor Society and had the opportunity to work with our students to build a recycling program at our school. I have also aided our NHS students in having an active role in our community by working with Homeless Angels, the Detroit Zoo, and the Flint Water Crisis.
In the Fall of 2013 I became the school's cross country coach and continued that role for the 2014-2015 school year. Being the coach I was able to create a cross country program for our school and organize meets for our students.
Throughout my time at Nexus Academy I have participated in many different programs and initiatives and have been able to build strong relationships with students to ensure their success.
