About Me:
My name is Katelyn Jones and I am a former teacher turned business owner. I own Lansing Mom, where I write, edit, work with Moms in the community and so much more. I am also the Events and Social Media Coordinator for Detroit Mom. Below details all my past teaching experience.
My most recent position was working in a Montessori Classroom, Four Corners Montessori in Madison Heights. I worked with in 4th-6th grade. During my time here I was able to learn about the Montessori Method, participate in trainings, and gain experience at the middle/elementary level.
Prior to working at Four Corners I was a Social Studies Teacher at Nexus Academy of Lansing. I taught US History, World History, Political Science, Economics and Psychology, along with College Prep and Advisory courses.
In past years at Nexus Academy I was a Lead Teacher for Success/Academic Coaches. My position as a lead teacher was to work with my colleagues to support them in their classrooms and to help them enact best practices. My position as a Success/Academic Coach was to motivate students, aid them in any content area they need help with, teach college and life skills, and prepare students for real world success.
At Nexus Academy I was able to advise students toward academic success, implement interventions, create student plans based off of data, create a mentoring program, lead National Honor Society as the Adviser, Lead Teach, and was the Cross Country Coach. For more information on my time at Nexus Academy please see the Nexus Academy tab under experiences.
I completed my student teaching year, in April 2012, at St. Johns High School. I taught tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade General Psychology. I was able to work with a wide array of students, and an excellent mentor teacher, which allowed me to grow and foster who I am as a teacher. For more information on my time at St. Johns please see the St. Johns tab under experiences.
I graduated from Michigan State University in May 2014 with a Masters Degree in Teaching and Curriculum. My undergraduate degree was completed at Michigan State University in 2011, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. I am fully certified to teach Social Studies and have a minor in, and am fully certified to teach, Psychology.
The summer of 2011 I spent teaching in Sydney, Australia, as well as traveling. While in Australia I taught at Naremburn Behavioral School and Asquith Boys High School. This experience opened me up to new cultures and different ways of teaching Social Studies. For more information on my time in Australia please see the tab under experiences.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, and being outdoors. I love to travel with my husband Ben and our sons Walter and Arlo. I have been to seven different countries for leisure as well as study. I enjoy reading and just finished the book, The Taster. I have a passion for learning and am always looking for ways to develop my knowledge. I love teaching, and advising, and am passionate about student life long success.
