Cross Cultural Teaching Abroad: Australia
My teaching experience abroad was in Sydney, Australia. While in Australia I taught and observed at Asquith Boys High School, in the areas of Geography, History, English and Mathematics. For part of my experience I worked one on one with students who were seen as achieving below grade level, to improve their content area knowledge in the fields of Mathematics and Geography. In order to improve content knowledge I first provided an example of whatever they were covering and then walked them through the steps until they
were able to complete the exercises on their own. I also had the opportunity to use my diverse content knowledge to create lesson plans in the field of English along with observing and aided in teaching in Geography and History.
The second school I taught and observed at, while in Australia, was Naremburn Behavioral School. Naremburn was an alternative school for behaviorally challenging students looking to continue to
their education. Students at Naremburn could be disrespectful, unruly, quick to anger and on edge. In my time at Naremburn I worked with students to help create a comfortable learning environment. I supplemented and worked through lessons that were sent in by teachers outside of the school in the fields of History and
Geography. Along with teaching responsibilities the school had a small number of students so the staff was responsible for cooking breakfast and lunch because most of the students were not provided with either at home.
