Family and Parent Communication
Having positive family communication can improve the involvement and the effort of your students not only in the classroom but outside the class in the community. I believe that parent/guardian contact is crucial throughout the year because they are able to support you and offer advice on their children. From the beginning of the year I would like to be in contact with parents through a letter/email home and have ways to contact them to report on their students progress.
I believe it is important for the parents to know who you are as a teacher and what your expectations are for the class so there is a mutual understanding about what learning will occur throughout the year.
When establishing relationships with parents or guardians it is important to share positive experiences along with making parents aware of where students need additional support or any behavioral problems that occur. In order to share positive experiences I choose to make good phone calls home/emails home. These phone calls or emails are not necessarily class related but can make a world of difference in how the parents and students perceive you as a teacher. It can confirm to parents that you care and are invested in their child. I also believe that parents should be addressed when a student needs extra support because they can provide insight and offer ways to help their student achieve at their highest level.
In summary keeping parents informed is a high priority. I believe in constant communication with the parents and ensure that they are able to be frequently updated upon what their students are working on in my classroom.
